When Is A Crown Necessary?

Dental crowns are an artificial tooth-shaped restoration that helps to restore the appearance and function of a natural tooth that has been lost, damaged or worn out due to disease or injury. Crowns have become the most common form of dental treatment in most cases where a tooth needs to be replaced or supported with a cap.

The crown becomes necessary in the following circumstances:

When the tooth has been damaged due to infection

A tooth infection or decaying process may begin if the patient is maintaining good oral hygiene, or is suffering from a disease that may trigger the decay. If early intervention is not sought to stop the infection, the tooth structure may suffer damage due to the infection reaching up to the roots. This is when a crown may be required to restore the tooth structure, following a root canal treatment.

When the tooth is lost or damaged due to injury or accident

Sometimes a tooth may get badly damaged in a serious accident or injury to the mouth. Depending upon the extent of injury and the tooth’s response, it may require a crown to support and preserve the tooth structure. Or, if the tooth needs extraction, it may have to be replaced with a dental implant and a crown.

When the tooth is cracked or chipped

Crown may also be used in a situation where the basic tooth structure is intact, but some part of the tooth has been broken or chipped. The crown would help to restore the full function of the tooth, and make it more pleasing from an aesthetic point of view as well. Crowns are also used if the previous restoration did not produce the desired results or is defective. Crown is an excellent solution with a high success rate and millions of satisfied users around the world.
