How long does an implant last?

If the dental implant process is performed properly where the implants get integrated with the bone successfully and restored in the right manner, then they can last a lifetime. The success rate of dental implants is between 96 and 98 percent. The 96 percent is often attributed to the implants in the upper jaw and the 98 percent success rate is attributed to the implants in the lower jaw.

A majority of dental implant failure cases occur due to inaccurate treatment planning or because of a wrong choice. Patients who suffer from uncontrolled diabetes and those who are heavy smokers are categorized by dentists as non-ideal candidates for dental implants. Such a conclusion is the result of such patients’ bone character which has been affected by their diet and smoking habits. If dental implants are placed in such a patient, successful integration with the bone is not expected to happen.

If a particular patient is a good candidate for dental implants and maintains good oral hygiene, the placed implants will usually last a lifetime. In such patients, implant failure or the need for a replacement implant is rarely seen. In order to ensure durability, it is crucial that the placement process is done right in the first instance itself, using high quality dental implant material.

Currently, there many companies which produce and market dental implants. Choosing a good product among all of them is vital. The choice should be governed by factors like what is good for the patient and the expectations from the implant. Moreover, a company’s track record and the type of support that they offer a patient has important bearing to the dental implant choice.

There are excellent dental implant products in the market with a proven track record of over 40 years. These are the ones that most dentists choose because of their long lasting successful results.
